Dandadan: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A wild, crude and surprisingly moving supernatural comedy for older teens that mixes ghost stories, alien abductions and teen romance. A girl from a family of mediums and a bullied boy obsessed with UFOs battle bizarre spirits and aliens together. Parents should know that aliens try to sexually assault the heroine, jokes about the boy's stolen genitals run through the plot, the teens often end up in underwear or naked, and the gore and monster designs are intense. One flashback depicts a mother's suicide, and a later arc involves children sacrificed by villagers. Age 16 matches the TV-MA rating.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent bloody fights with ghosts and aliens; characters are beaten bloody, burned and mutilated. In the first episode aliens pin the teen heroine down and threaten to rape her with a metal device, and she narrowly escapes another sexual assault later.

Language

Moderate

Moderate: "bitch," "bastard," "ass," "piss" and "crap," at least one s-word, and God's name used in vain. Counts differ between the dub and subtitles.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Crude sexual humor drives the plot: a ghost steals the boy's genitals and the teens joke about it constantly. The leads are often stripped to underwear or naked with nudity obscured, and outfits and innuendo are suggestive.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The heroine's grandmother, a gruff spirit medium, almost always has a cigarette in her mouth, and the show plays it as part of her character. No drug use or drunkenness is reported.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Grotesque, psychedelic spirits and aliens plus body horror. A flashback shows loan sharks stealing a poor single mother's daughter and the mother taking her own life, and a later arc centers on children sacrificed to a monster.
