A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A gentler, often funny corner of the Game of Thrones world, but still for older teens. A big-hearted hedge knight and his young squire enter a tournament that turns deadly. Most episodes are light, then a brutal trial by combat brings bloody deaths, including a fatal mace blow to the head, and a flashback shows a child being killed. Expect frequent f-words and c-words, bare breasts, full-frontal male nudity in a flashback, and a graphic bathroom gag. There are no sex scenes, but the violence and nudity make about 16 and up the right starting point.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Sword and mace combat and jousting injuries, a crossbow bolt pulled from a bleeding stomach, a horse fatally wounded, a woman's finger broken, and a sexualized threat of impalement. The episode 5 trial is bloody, and a flashback shows a child's throat cut.

Language

Strong

Strong. Plugged In counted 13 f-words and three c-words in the first episode alone, plus 'arse,' 'piss,' 'bastard' and 'whore,' though it notes the show is tamer than Game of Thrones.

Sex and nudity

Strong

No sex scenes. A flashback shows a man fully naked, genitals included; a sex worker's breasts are bared; the hero's bare rear appears, once during graphic diarrhea. Sex workers talk frankly, and a man leads two women off to bed.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Ale flows constantly. Men get drunk, slur and turn sloppy or violent, and characters admit they choose badly when drinking. A few background characters smoke cigars; no drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The trial by seven is tense and ends in on-screen deaths, followed by a funeral pyre and grief. Flashbacks of children scavenging a battlefield and a child's killing may disturb; elsewhere the mood is light.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

Dunk keeps standing up for people with less power even when it costs him. Ask what makes someone honorable when the rules favor the powerful.
