Common Side Effects: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A smart, darkly funny animated conspiracy thriller for older teens and adults, not a cartoon for kids. A mushroom expert finds a fungus that seems to cure any illness or injury, and he and an old high school friend are hunted by a drug company and government agents who want it buried. Expect steady profanity including f-words, shootings and stabbings with blood, a woman who shoots herself to get the cure, several on-screen deaths including a parent's fatal fall, and drug use at the heart of the plot. A couple has sex in one episode, though no source described nudity. Age 15 reflects the language, violence and drug themes.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateAnimated but realistic: people are shot and stabbed with visible blood, an agent dies from a planted mine, a man is shoved off a cliff onto rocks, and a house is burned. One character shoots herself in the chest to get a healing mushroom.
Language
StrongProfanity runs throughout the season, including f-words and s-words, so expect it in most episodes rather than as rare outbursts.
Sex and nudity
ModerateIn episode 4 a main character and her boyfriend have sex on a work trip. Adult Swim rates that episode TV-14 with an S label for sexual situations, and no source described nudity. She also lies to him about meeting another man.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDrugs drive the story: a pharmaceutical giant is the villain, characters take the mushroom and hallucinate, a group doses a city water tower with it, and one man takes several at once and has a terrifying trip. Adults drink wine.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateTense chases, a federal agent who stalks and harasses a main character, a plotted plane crash, an armed raid and frightening hallucinations. A main character's mother dies in a fall from a tree, and other characters are killed on screen.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
The show imagines a drug company hiding a cure to protect its profits. How much of that is satire, and how do real medicines get tested, priced and approved?
