Pluribus: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A slow-burning, darkly funny sci-fi drama for mature teens and adults. After an alien signal fuses nearly all of humanity into one cheerful hive mind, a bitter novelist is one of the few people left unaffected. The opening episodes show mass deaths, including her partner dying in her arms, and later comes a grim discovery about what the hive eats. Expect frequent f-words, brief rear and side nudity, a relationship between two women that turns sexual, and heavy drinking. Little is graphic, but the language, grief and unsettling ideas make it best for about 15 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateBloodied bodies, crashes and fires after a worldwide seizure kills hundreds of millions. A grenade injures a character, a man is badly impaled in the jungle, and a man missing part of his leg is handed the severed limb. Mostly aftermath rather than attacks.
Language
StrongFrequent and strong. Plugged In counted nearly 20 f-words in the premiere and 13 in the second episode, plus s-words, 'dick,' 'piss off,' and regular misuse of God's and Jesus' names.
Sex and nudity
ModerateThe virus spreads through kissing, shown on screen. A woman walks naked to a shower, seen from behind; a hot tub scene shows buttocks and the sides of breasts. Two women begin sleeping together late in season 1.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateThe lead drinks heavily, often to cope, and her car's breathalyzer hints at a past problem; she gets drunk and vomits. She secretly doses someone with a truth drug and asks for heroin as a ploy.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateEerie and unsettling: crowds convulse in unison, the dead lie in the streets, wolves dig at a grave, and a warehouse of packaged human remains reveals the hive's food source. Grief and isolation run deep.
Worth talking about
The hive is kind and peaceful, but it has erased everyone's individuality. Ask your teen whether a world without conflict is worth losing the freedom to disagree.
