The Best New Series
Every show here premiered in 2025 or 2026, apart from two 2024 series that returned with new seasons in late 2025. If you've worked through the usual recommendations and keep scrolling past the same thumbnails, this is the list to start from.
The most useful distinction is commitment. Adolescence, Bait and Lord of the Flies (2026) are short and complete, finishable in an evening or a weekend. The Pitt, Pluribus and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are ongoing series: superb first seasons that you'll want to keep following. The half-hour comedies, The Studio, The Chair Company and Nobody Wants This, are the easiest to fit around a busy week.
Most of these are made for adults, and the notes flag strong language, violence and sex. For a mixed room, Win or Lose and The Other Bennet Sister are the gentlest picks. For more, see Binge-Worthy Limited Series, The Best Comedy Series, Prestige Drama Series and Shows to Watch With Your Teen. For films, see The Best New Movies.
The Pitt
Series · 2025Each episode covers one hour of a single shift in a Pittsburgh emergency room, and it's the most gripping hospital drama since ER, which Noah Wyle also starred in. It won the top drama Emmy in 2025 and again in 2026, and a second season arrived in January. Very graphic medical gore.
Pluribus
Series · 2025Vince Gilligan's first show since Better Call Saul: an alien virus turns almost everyone on Earth into a calm, contented hive mind, and Rhea Seehorn plays one of the few people left unaffected, and furious about it. Strange, funny and patient. Seehorn won the Emmy, and deserved it.
Adolescence
Series · 2025Four episodes, each filmed in a single unbroken take, about a thirteen-year-old boy arrested for the murder of a girl from his school. It's really about how boys are pulled into toxic corners of the internet, and it became a national conversation in Britain. Harrowing, and especially worth watching if you're a parent.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Series · 2026A Game of Thrones prequel at a much smaller scale: a big, decent, not-very-bright hedge knight and the bald little boy who becomes his squire, set about ninety years before the main series. Short episodes, a lot of warmth and humor, and violence when the jousting turns serious.
The Studio
Series · 2025Seth Rogen as the new head of a struggling Hollywood studio who loves movies and keeps ruining them. Many scenes play out in long, frantic single takes, and the celebrity cameos are funny rather than smug. It won the comedy Emmy in 2025. Heavy on swearing, but you don't need to work in film.
Widow's Bay
Series · 2026A horror comedy about a small New England island trying to attract tourists, with locals who insist the place is cursed. Matthew Rhys plays the mayor trying to sell it, and he's wonderful. It won the 2026 Emmy for best comedy, and it's genuinely creepy in places.
Heated Rivalry
Series · 2025Two rival hockey stars carry on a secret relationship across years of games, press conferences and near-misses. A Canadian production that became one of the most-discussed shows of the winter. Romantic and surprisingly tender, but it has frequent explicit sex scenes, so know your audience.
Task
Series · 2025From the creator of Mare of Easttown: Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent and former priest hunting a crew robbing drug houses in the Philadelphia suburbs, led by a struggling garbage collector played by Tom Pelphrey. Slow, sad and gripping, with both men at their best. Violent, and Pelphrey won an Emmy.
Bait
Series · 2026Riz Ahmed plays a struggling actor who auditions to be the next James Bond, then makes sure the paparazzi photograph him leaving, with disastrous results. Six half-hour episodes that are funny, angry and personal, and the online hate it depicts turns frighteningly real. Easily finished in an evening.
Lord of the Flies (2026)
Series · 2026Jack Thorne, co-creator of Adolescence, adapts William Golding's novel in four episodes, each centered on a different boy. It's the first TV version of the book, and most critics praised it as bold and powerful. Violent, and hard to watch precisely because the characters are children.
The Chair Company
Series · 2025Tim Robinson, of I Think You Should Leave, plays a man whose chair collapses under him at a work presentation, and whose quest to find out why spirals into a full-blown conspiracy. Deeply uncomfortable and very funny. If his cringe comedy is your thing, this is him at full stretch.
Murderbot
Series · 2025Alexander Skarsgård as a security android that has secretly hacked itself free and would much rather watch soap operas than protect the humans in its care. Episodes are short and the deadpan narration is the joke. Adapted from Martha Wells's Murderbot Diaries books.
Fallout
Series · 2024Premiered in 2024; its second season arrived in December 2025 and moved the action to New Vegas. A sunny vault dweller, a centuries-old gunslinger ghoul and a lot of retro-futurist jokes in a nuclear wasteland. You don't need to have played the games. Very bloody, often played for laughs.
Nobody Wants This
Series · 2024Premiered in 2024; season two arrived in October 2025. Kristen Bell is an agnostic podcaster who falls for Adam Brody's rabbi, and the comedy comes from everything that makes that hard. Light, warm and quick, with plenty of frank sex talk. Season two drew more mixed reviews than the first, but the leads still charm.
Star City
Series · 2026A spinoff of For All Mankind set inside the Soviet space program, in a version of history where the Soviets reached the moon first. Colder and more paranoid than the parent show, and critics called it a worthy expansion of that world. Eight episodes.
How to Get to Heaven from Belfast
Series · 2026From Lisa McGee, who made Derry Girls: three childhood friends start to suspect that the death of a fourth, long out of touch, wasn't what it seemed. A murder mystery that's mostly a comedy, with Derry Girls levels of swearing. All eight hour-long episodes arrived in February.
Dept. Q
Series · 2025Matthew Goode as a prickly Edinburgh detective dumped in a basement cold-case unit, and the first case he picks up is gripping. Scott Frank, who made The Queen's Gambit, co-created it and directed most of the nine episodes. Strong language and some disturbing scenes of captivity.
The Other Bennet Sister
Series · 2026Mary Bennet, the plain, preachy sister from Pride and Prejudice, gets her own story and turns out to be wonderful company. Warm, funny and gentle, with Richard E. Grant as Mr. Bennet. The coziest new series on this list, and an easy one to share across generations.
When Life Gives You Tangerines
Series · 2025A Korean drama that follows one woman's life on Jeju Island from the 1950s onward, narrated by her daughter. Sixteen long episodes in Korean with subtitles, and people who start it tend to cry through most of them. The pick here if you want something gentle that still moves you.
Common Side Effects
Series · 2025An animated conspiracy thriller: an eccentric loner finds a mushroom that can cure almost anything, and powerful people want it gone. From a co-creator of Scavengers Reign, and it won a Peabody. Smart, funny and properly tense. Animated, but not for kids.
Wonder Man
Series · 2026A Marvel show that's really a Hollywood satire: a struggling actor with secret powers chases the lead in a superhero reboot, and Ben Kingsley returns as the washed-up Trevor Slattery. Very little fighting and a lot of charm. It was later canceled, so treat its eight episodes as complete.
Win or Lose
Series · 2025Pixar's first original series: a kids' softball team's week before the championship game, each episode told from a different character's point of view. Smart and kind about anxiety and pressure, and short enough for a school night. The family pick on this list.
