When Life Gives You Tangerines: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A sweeping, tearjerking Korean family saga for teens who can handle heavy emotion, available subtitled or dubbed. It follows a poor girl from Jeju Island who dreams of being a poet and the steadfast boy who loves her, through five decades of marriage and parenthood. There is little violence and nothing sexual on screen, but the losses are hard: a young mother dies of lung disease, a three-year-old dies in an accident on a stormy day, and the final episodes deal with aging, serious illness and loss. Smoking, drinking and some s-words also appear. Age 13 reflects the grief, especially the death of a small child.
