Train Dreams: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for some violence and sexuality.

A quiet, sorrowful and beautiful period drama for teens who can settle into a slow film about grief. It follows a logger in the early-1900s Pacific Northwest whose wife and baby daughter are lost in a wildfire while he is away working. Along the way come racist killings, deadly logging accidents and a revenge shooting, though little gore. A brief sex scene between the married couple has movement but no nudity, and the language is very mild. The loss of a child and the lonely, heavy mood make it a better fit for about 13 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A Chinese worker is dragged off and thrown from a bridge to his death, a man is shot twice in revenge, falling trees kill loggers, and injured horses scream after a log strikes them. A man spits blood; nothing is gory.

Language

Mild

Very little. Plugged In counted just one s-word and one 'damn,' and other guides note 'ass,' 'hell' and 'jeez.' The single s-word (in 'horses--t') is the strongest term.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A married couple has a brief sex scene with heavy breathing and movement, framed from the shoulders up with no nudity, and they are later shown in bed under blankets. Men make crude talk about dogs mating.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Men smoke pipes, and the couple has whiskey or wine with dinner. No drunkenness or drug use is noted.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Grief dominates: the hero searches a burning forest for his missing family, has dreams that seem to foretell disaster, sees men die on the job, and lives for decades with loss. A haunting vision adds an eerie, ghostly touch.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
  • Racism
  • Animal death

Worth talking about

The film shows Chinese families driven out and a Black man's brother killed because of his race, mostly as background to ordinary life. Talk with your teen about how communities came to treat that violence as normal.
