Hamnet: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic content, some strong sexuality, and partial nudity.

A beautiful but devastating family drama about grief, best for teens who are ready for heavy emotion. It imagines Shakespeare's wife, Agnes, and the death of their young son, Hamnet, from plague, shown in an agonizing, drawn-out scene. There are also painful childbirths, a baby who seems stillborn, a mother's death in childbirth in flashback, and Will's father beating him. One passionate, mostly clothed sex scene includes a glimpse of bare backside, and a grieving character considers suicide at a cliff edge. Language is clean. The child's death and raw grief that follows are the main reason for 13 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Will's father hits and berates him until Will shoves him into a wall. A flashback shows a mother dying in childbirth in a bloodstained gown. Children suffer from plague, and wrapped bodies are glimpsed. Staged swordplay and poisonings in a play.

Language

Mild

No profanity reported. Characters use period insults such as 'wench' and 'gypsy,' the latter an ethnic slur.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Agnes and Will have a passionate, mostly clothed sex scene before marrying, with a glimpse of his bare backside, and it leads to a pregnancy. Bare legs and stomach show through a sheer shift during childbirth, and brief male shirtlessness.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink wine at meals and celebrations, and Will gets visibly drunk once, overwhelmed by grief.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

A child dies of plague in a long, agonizing sequence, followed by raw, intense grief. Painful labor scenes, a newborn who appears stillborn before gasping, plague boils, and a character standing at a precipice who considers suicide.

Sensitive topics

Worth talking about

Agnes and Will grieve their son in very different ways. Talk about how people cope with loss and how making art can be part of healing.
