How to Get to Heaven from Belfast: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A fast, foul-mouthed comic mystery from the creator of Derry Girls, aimed at adults and older teens. Three old school friends travel to a wake, find that the body in the coffin isn't their friend's, and get pulled into a chase tied to a dark secret from their teens. The tone is silly, but the danger is real: guns, chases, blood, a violent pursuer, a backstory of children abused in a cult, and deaths that include children offscreen. Expect frequent f-words, lots of heavy drinking and hangovers, and an offscreen sexual encounter. Age 15 reflects the language, drinking and frequent violent moments.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateCharacters are held at gunpoint, chased, jabbed in the neck with a syringe and hurt in a car crash, with blood and bloody injuries shown. Deaths, including of children, happen offscreen, and a death in the friends' school days drives the plot.
Language
StrongConstant swearing, including f-words and s-words, Irish slang such as "shite" and "arse," and religious exclamations. A song lyric repeats the n-word.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA flirtation between two characters builds to an offscreen sexual encounter, with kissing and references to sex. Some bawdy jokes. No nudity is reported.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateHeavy drinking at dinners, parties and clubs: rounds of shots, drunken dancing and hangovers, plus drinking to cope with stress. A fatal accident is blamed on drinking, and several characters smoke. No illegal drugs reported.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA relentless pursuer, a burning building, a wake with a coffin, and the creeping dread of an old secret tied to two girls' abuse and neglect in a religious cult and a fire that killed children. The comic tone softens much of it.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a child
