Murderbot: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A dry, funny sci-fi comedy for older teens and adults about a security android that secretly hacks its own controls and would rather binge soap operas than protect its well-meaning human clients. The humor is gentle, but the content is not: frequent f-words, creature attacks with blood and gore, people shot and killed, sex talk including a hinted threesome, a woman who sexually harasses the hero and forces a kiss on it, and nonsexual nudity of its genital-free body. One crew member recalls past addiction and suicidal feelings. Age 15 reflects the steady language and gory moments.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGun battles with rival security units, a knee-shooting, humans killed by the hero and by a blast, and alien attacks with blood and guts; the hero loses half its torso to a bite. It also shoots itself to stop a hostile override, and survives.
Language
StrongProfanity throughout, much of it in the hero's sarcastic inner narration and outbursts. One guide counted 13 f-words and 17 s-words in the first three episodes alone, plus asshole and dick, and found the swearing eases somewhat later on.
Sex and nudity
ModerateSex talk and suggestive situations: crew couples, a hinted threesome and mentions of sex robots. A woman sexually harasses the hero, speculating about its body and forcing a kiss on it. Its genital-free body is seen fully unclothed, and men appear shirtless.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateDrinking is rare, and no drug use is shown. In a flashback, a crew member confides that he once struggled with drug addiction, and with suicidal feelings, while working as a corporate spy.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateHostile alien creatures, a rival research team found dead, crew members badly hurt, and tense escapes. A flashback reveals that one crew member was once suicidal, though nothing is acted out, and the hero's loneliness and fear of people are taken seriously beneath the jokes.

Worth talking about
Murderbot was built to obey but wants to choose for itself, and it feels awkward around people. What makes someone a person, and how do you cope when you feel out of place?
