Sakamoto Days: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.

An action comedy anime for older teens about a retired hitman who now runs a convenience store and refuses to kill, even as assassins keep coming for him and his family. The comedy is broad, but the violence is graphic and nearly constant: stabbings, gunfights, beheadings, severed limbs and blood-soaked corpses. Language includes f-words and several s-words, there are crude sex jokes, implied sex and a brief nude image, and adults smoke and drink. The second episode shows a suicide attempt that is stopped, and a murdered cat is seen later on. Best for 16 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Strong, bloody violence in nearly every episode: stabbings and shootings with spurting blood, throats cut, decapitations with close-ups of heads, severed limbs, necks snapped and rooms of bloodied corpses after a massacre. The hero himself fights without killing.

Language

Moderate

One review counted an f-word and four s-words in episode 1, and another lists 'f---er' and 'dumba--.' Elsewhere expect 'damn,' 'hell,' 'bastard' and 'son of a bitch,' constant death threats, and jokes mocking the hero's weight.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Crude sex jokes, references to sexual harassment and stalking, a couple implied to have just had sex, a brief sexual threat, and a fleeting image of a naked woman lying on a corpse with her buttocks visible. A man showers off screen and is seen shirtless while bandaged.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults smoke cigarettes, drink sake and beer, and talk about booze. A vampire-like villain drinks from a blood bag. No drug use shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Relentless life-or-death peril from assassins, a kidnapping, people falling from a damaged plane and a haunted-house episode. Gory aftermath shots, including severed heads and piles of corpses, can be genuinely disturbing.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Animal death
  • Bullying

Worth talking about

Sakamoto gave up killing for his family and helps others leave crime behind. Can people truly change, and what helps them do it?
