Wonder Man: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A grounded, low-action Marvel comedy about Hollywood that suits teens more than young superhero fans. A struggling actor with hidden powers teams up with a washed-up older actor to chase the lead in a superhero movie remake, and most episodes are auditions and friendship rather than fights. Expect a handful of s-words, talk of past alcoholism, drug use and debts, a police gunfight in one episode, and a black-and-white episode in which a star's powers misfire and another actor vanishes. Age 13 reflects the language and adult references more than the action.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSuperpowered blasts crack walls, blow out a window and destroy a film set. One episode builds to a hostage standoff and a police gunfight, an on-set shooting turns out to be fake blood, and an old movie shows lasers and gunplay.
Language
ModerateOne reviewer counted six s-words across the first three episodes, and another tallied more than 20 profanities in total, including "ass," "damn," "hell," "bloody hell" and "dicking around." No f-words were reported.
Sex and nudity
MildRomance is minor: a breakup and a brief kiss from an ex. An audition script and a few jokes are suggestive, and the older actor mentions past debts to prostitutes. No sex scenes or nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateCharacters drink at bars and parties without getting drunk on screen. Anecdotes describe actors blind drunk or high on set, a former star slides into alcoholism, and a man sober for 13 years recalls paying off drug debts.
Scary or intense scenes
MildLittle that's scary. The hero dreams he kills another actor, a hostage standoff brings brief tension, and a man disappears inside another man when his powers go wrong, with his fate left unclear.
Sensitive topics
- Addiction
Worth talking about
Simon hides his powers to fit Hollywood's rules. When is it worth hiding part of yourself to get ahead, and when does that cost too much?
