Eternity: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and some strong language.

A sweet, funny afterlife romance that suits teens and up, with grown-up jokes and a lot of drinking. A woman arrives in a bureaucratic version of the hereafter and must choose which of two husbands to spend forever with: the man she shared decades with, or her first love, who died young in war. Expect one f-word, several s-words, a clothed sex scene with thrusting and moaning, running porn jokes, a comic glimpse of a bare behind, and characters drinking to excess. One man's choking death is shown briefly; other deaths, including a young boy's hit-and-run, are only mentioned. The sexual content and language are why we suggest 13.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Mostly comic: a slap, a punch, a scuffle between the two rivals, and guards tackling a man. A man's choking death is shown briefly, blood comically spatters a surgical nurse, and a boy of about nine mentions dying in a hit-and-run.

Language

Moderate

One f-word and about nine s-words, plus a-hole, bitch, crap, damn and hell, frequent goddamn and Jesus Christ as exclamations, a 'blue balls' joke, and a middle-finger gesture.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A clothed couple has sex under the covers with thrusting and moaning but no nudity; another hookup is implied. Pinups get called porn, a comic ad shows a bare behind, a joke references pedophilia, and a drunk man harasses a woman before someone intervenes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Heavy drinking throughout: shots, drunkenness and hangovers, with one husband working as an afterlife bartender. Alcohol is treated as the answer to stress. There's a fleeting cocaine reference, and a Smoker World ad shows cigarette packs.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Not scary overall. A man chokes and collapses early on, a woman is chased by security through an eerie tunnel of memories, and the threat of a dark Void adds mild suspense. The frank focus on death may prompt questions.

Worth talking about

Joan has to choose between a first love and a long life together. What makes a relationship last, and is it fair to compare a memory with a real person?
