Date Night Movies
Date night needs a film you'll both actually enjoy, not one that one of you sits through politely. These picks cover romance, comedy and thrillers, most of them from the last decade, and every note says what kind of night it suits: a first date, a tired weeknight, a big Friday, or an evening you'd like to spend arguing about the ending.
The useful question is what you want the evening to feel like, because that matters more than genre. For a laugh, Palm Springs, Game Night and the 2025 Naked Gun are the surest bets. For a swoon, Past Lives, Eternity and When Harry Met Sally.... For popcorn, Top Gun: Maverick and The Fall Guy. And for something to talk about all the way to bed, Parasite, Decision to Leave or Gone Girl.
A few practical warnings. Several are rated R with sexual content, notably Challengers, Hit Man and Palm Springs, which matters more on a first date than a fiftieth. Parasite and Decision to Leave are subtitled, and Past Lives partly so. Gone Girl is about a marriage going very wrong, so choose your moment. Palm Springs
Movie · 2020The safest bet for two people with different tastes: a romantic comedy inside a time-loop comedy, with Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti reliving the same wedding day. Funny, romantic and a little existential in about ninety minutes. Ideal for a weeknight when you want to laugh and still feel something. Rated R, and frank about sex and drugs.
Knives Out
Movie · 2019For the couple who likes to compete: pause it, place your bets on who did it, and see who was right. Daniel Craig's Southern detective is enormous fun and the mystery plays fair. A good early-date pick, since it gives you plenty to talk about without a single awkward scene.
Past Lives
Movie · 2023Two childhood friends from Seoul reconnect decades later in New York, where she now lives with her husband. Quiet, adult and achingly romantic, with no villain and no easy answer. For a calm night when you both want to talk afterward. Partly in Korean with subtitles.
The Fall Guy
Movie · 2024Ryan Gosling as a battered stuntman, Emily Blunt as the director he still loves, and a missing movie star he has to find. Big practical stunts and real chemistry make it the ideal popcorn night for a couple where one of you wants action and the other wants romance.
Crazy Rich Asians
Movie · 2018A glossy, old-school romantic comedy: an economics professor meets her boyfriend's fabulously wealthy Singapore family, and his formidable mother. Lavish, funny and swoony, with Michelle Yeoh stealing every scene. For a night when you want something beautiful and pleasurable rather than challenging.
Hit Man
Movie · 2023A mild-mannered professor poses as a fake hitman for police stings, then falls for a woman who wants to hire him. Glen Powell and Adria Arjona have serious heat, and the plot gets twistier and funnier as it goes. For a playful, flirty night. Rated R, with sex scenes.
Game Night
Movie · 2018A competitive couple's game night turns into a real kidnapping, and nobody can tell which parts are the game. Smarter and better directed than most studio comedies, with Jesse Plemons as a hilariously creepy neighbor. Perfect for a night in with friends, or just the two of you wanting to laugh.
Eternity
Movie · 2025A romantic comedy set in the afterlife, where a newly dead woman must choose between the husband she spent her life with and her first love, who died young and has been waiting for her. Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner keep it sweet and funny. For a romantic night that asks what you'd choose.
La La Land
Movie · 2016A jazz pianist and an aspiring actress fall in love in Los Angeles while chasing their dreams. Bright musical numbers up front and real bittersweetness at the end, so pick it for a night when neither of you minds a happy-sad finish. The songs will follow you home.
The Big Sick
Movie · 2017Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon wrote their own real courtship, including the part where she fell seriously ill and he got to know her parents in a hospital waiting room. Funny, honest and romantic. For a date night when you want something with heart and a little real life in it.
Challengers
Movie · 2024A tennis love triangle told across years, charged with competition and desire. Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist are all excellent, and the pulsing score makes every match feel like a fight. For a night when you want something sexy and energetic rather than sweet. Rated R, with sexual content.
The Naked Gun (2025)
Movie · 2025Liam Neeson plays Frank Drebin's son with a perfectly straight face, and the gags come at the old relentless pace: puns, sight jokes and slapstick, many of them excellent. Pamela Anderson turns out to be a great comic partner. Short and silly, for when you're both tired and just want to laugh.
Top Gun: Maverick
Movie · 2022The rare blockbuster that couples with different tastes agree on: thrilling flying, a big emotional payoff, and a grown-up romance with Jennifer Connelly. Best on the biggest screen you have with the sound up. For a crowd-pleasing Friday night that asks nothing of you.
Rye Lane
Movie · 2023Two twentysomethings nursing breakups spend a day wandering south London, talking. Brightly colored, fast and very funny: a modern cousin of Before Sunrise with sharper jokes. A lesser-known gem, and short, though there's a lot of swearing and some British slang to keep up with.
Parasite
Movie · 2019A poor family cons its way into working for a rich one, and the film slides from con-artist comedy into something much darker. For a night when you both want to be kept guessing and handed plenty to argue about afterward. In Korean with subtitles, and violent in its final act.
Decision to Leave
Movie · 2022A detective falls for the widow who may have killed her husband. Park Chan-wook makes it a romance first and a mystery second: slow, elegant and full of longing. For a night when you want something stylish and grown-up and you're both happy to read subtitles. Some violence, but mostly yearning.
Gone Girl
Movie · 2014When a wife vanishes, her husband becomes the prime suspect, and nothing about their marriage is what it seemed. Gripping and darkly funny, with Rosamund Pike unforgettable. Best for an established couple who can laugh about it afterward; maybe not a first date. Rated R, with sex and one very bloody scene.
When Harry Met Sally...
Movie · 1989The template for the modern romantic comedy, and still the best of them: years of conversations about whether men and women can be friends, written by Nora Ephron. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are perfect together. For a cozy night in, especially in autumn, when its New York looks loveliest.
Before Sunrise
Movie · 1995Two strangers get off a train together in Vienna and talk until dawn. For a slow, romantic night when you want conversation more than plot, and the start of a trilogy you can continue together. Lovely early in a relationship, and maybe even better a decade in.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Movie · 2004After a breakup, a man has his ex erased from his memory, then changes his mind halfway through the procedure. Strange, inventive and painfully romantic, with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet at their best. For a couple who likes something to unpack afterward. Not ideal for anyone mid-breakup.
