La La Land: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for some language.
A romantic, bittersweet musical that suits most young teens, especially those who love music or acting. An aspiring actress and a jazz pianist fall in love in Los Angeles while chasing their dreams, and ambition puts their relationship under strain. Content is light: one f-word and a handful of other swear words, kissing, the couple living together, and drinking at parties. There's no violence or scary material, though the ending is more wistful than happy. Otherwise it plays like a PG, but the single f-word earns the PG-13 and is why we suggest 13.
What's in it
Violence
NoneNo violence. The closest thing is a couple's heated argument and an angry middle-finger gesture during a traffic jam.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted one f-word and four s-words, plus a few uses of 'ass,' 'damn' and 'hell,' misuse of God's name and two rude gestures.
Sex and nudity
MildKissing, the couple moving in together and sharing a bed in non-sexual scenes, a woman in a towel after a shower, and bikinis and short dresses at Hollywood parties. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink wine, champagne and beer at dinners, bars and a lively Hollywood pool party. No drugs or drunkenness are shown.
Scary or intense scenes
NoneNothing frightening. The emotional weight comes from career disappointments, a painful argument and an ending that may leave romantic viewers sad.
