My Hero Academia: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A hugely popular superhero-school anime that starts as upbeat action and grows much darker, best for young teens. A powerless boy inherits the world's greatest superpower and trains with classmates to fight villains. Early seasons have bloody but non-graphic battles, crude jokes from a boy who ogles girls, and an adult heroine's innuendo. In episode 1, a bully tells the hero to jump off a roof. Later seasons add child abuse, including a girl experimented on for her power and a mother who scalds her son's face, a small boy whose power kills his whole family, and wartime deaths and amputations. Thirteen and up with a parent.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSuperpowered battles with explosions, broken bones, burns and characters coughing blood. Later seasons are bloodier, with characters losing limbs, including a teacher who has his leg amputated mid-battle, deaths on both sides, and a villain whose touch turns people to dust.
Language
ModerateOccasional mild-to-moderate words in the English dub: 's--t,' 'damn,' 'hell,' 'bastard,' 'ass' and 'crap,' plus insults like 'jerkwad.' One classmate's constant angry threats are a big part of the dialogue.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTight, revealing hero costumes, an adult heroine billed as the 'R-rated hero' who carries a whip and handcuffs and makes innuendo, and a boy who ogles and comments on female classmates' bodies. Brief nonsexual nudity and bathing scenes.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults smoke and drink, later seasons mention getting drunk, and fictional drugs that boost or erase superpowers drive parts of the plot.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongEarly villains are creepy but manageable. Later arcs turn disturbing: a little girl experimented on for her power, a small boy whose power disintegrates his family, including his young sister and dog, and a hero father whose abuse drives his wife to scald their son.

Worth talking about
Midoriya is bullied for years and is even told to jump off a roof. Talk about how cruel words can hurt, and what to do if someone tells you or a friend to self-harm.
