Stranger Things: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.

A nostalgic sci-fi horror adventure that many families watch together, though it gets much darker and gorier as it goes. Kids in 1980s Indiana fight monsters and secret government labs with bikes, walkie-talkies and loyalty. Season 1 is mostly spooky, while seasons 4 and 5 bring graphic killings of teens, a lab massacre of children and big body counts. A creature eats a pet cat, and the final season includes talk of suicide. Expect constant s-words, a rare f-word, slurs from bullies, teen pot smoking, underage drinking and implied teen sex. We suggest 14 for the full run; a mature 12-year-old may manage season 1.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Monsters maul and kill people, and a villain kills teens by snapping their bones and gouging their eyes. Season 4 shows children massacred in a lab; season 5 adds a beheading and heavy gunfire. A creature eats a boy's pet cat, and rats burst apart.

Language

Strong

S-words are frequent, at times more than 30 in a single episode, along with b-words, a-words and misuse of God's name. F-words are rare. Bullies use homophobic slurs and a racist taunt, and the middle finger shows up often.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Teens kiss, flirt and date. A teen couple sleeps together in season 1 (kissing and undressing to a bra, then a cutaway), and another wakes up together in underwear in season 3. A married mother nearly has an affair with an older teen.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

The sheriff drinks heavily, takes pills and smokes in early seasons. Teens drink, sometimes to excess, and a stoner character often smokes marijuana in season 4, played for laughs. In season 5 the heroes knock out a family with a drugged dessert and a syringe.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained horror with jump scares, possessed characters and a villain who tortures victims with their traumas, then kills them. Children are experimented on; loved characters die. Season 4 hints a teen girl is bulimic and shows a man's suicide attempt; season 5 has suicide talk.

  • Child abuse
  • Bullying
  • Suicide
  • Animal death
  • Eating disorders

Worth talking about

The friends win by trusting each other and standing up for people others write off. Talk about how the show handles grief and trauma, especially in season 4, where characters who hide their pain are the most vulnerable.
