Creed: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for violence, language and some sensuality.
A stirring boxing drama for young teens and up, especially fans of the Rocky films. Adonis Johnson, the son Apollo Creed never knew, talks a retired Rocky Balboa into training him, while Rocky faces his own fight with cancer. The bouts are bloody and brutal, the language includes one f-word, several s-words and one use of the n-word, and one scene implies a couple has sex. Drinking is light and there is no drug content. Best for about 13 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateBloody, punishing fights: cuts above the eyes and on the cheeks, swollen faces, bloody eyes, and boxers knocked out cold. There is also a brawl outside the ring, and young Adonis fights other kids in a juvenile detention center.
Language
ModerateOne f-word (both Common Sense and Movieguide note it), about a half-dozen s-words, one use of the n-word by a Black character during a fight, plus 'ass,' 'bitch,' 'hell' and 'oh my God.'
Sex and nudity
ModerateAdonis and Bianca kiss passionately and are implied to sleep together, with some bare skin and a bra strap shown. A men's magazine is briefly picked up in Rocky's spare room. No explicit nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildLight: a crowd drinks at a fight in Tijuana, Adonis's mother sips wine, and Rocky leaves a bottle of whiskey at a friend's grave. No drug use or smoking is noted.
Scary or intense scenes
MildRocky's cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy and vomiting bring sad moments, and the fights are hard to watch, but nothing is scary.
Worth talking about
Adonis wants to make his own name instead of riding his famous father's. Ask your teen what it means to build an identity apart from family expectations.
