Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A gorgeous but very bloody dark-fantasy anime for teens; Netflix rates it TV-MA, though some platforms list TV-14. A boy becomes a demon hunter after a demon slaughters his family and turns his little sister into a demon. Expect decapitations, severed limbs, people eaten, and murdered children's bodies in the first episode. Suicide comes up twice: the hero slashes his own throat inside a dream to wake up, and a later season ends with a character blowing up himself and his family, children included. A pleasure-district arc adds brothels, revealing outfits and lewd jokes, plus brief bathing nudity. Best for 14 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and frequent: decapitations, severed limbs, faces torn off, people eaten, and blood that spurts and pools. Children are among the victims, the hero cuts his own throat in a dream to wake up, and a man deliberately blows up himself, his wife and daughters.

Language

Moderate

Occasional rather than constant: 's--t,' 'bastard,' 'piss,' 'ass,' 'crap,' 'hell,' 'damn' and 'God' as an exclamation, varying between the subtitles and the English dub.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A woman bathes with her hair covering her breasts, men appear shirtless, and some women wear very revealing outfits. One boy constantly makes lewd remarks about girls' bodies, and a later arc is set in a brothel district.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults occasionally drink and smoke, a few people are briefly seen drunk, and a drunken father hits his son.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Grotesque demons with extra limbs, maggot-covered corpses, gruesome transformations and a family massacre make for sustained horror. Tragic backstories of abused and abandoned children weigh heavily, and one fighter cuts himself so his blood will lure demons.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide
  • Self-harm
  • Death of a parent
  • Death of a child
  • Child abuse
  • Domestic abuse

Worth talking about

Tanjiro shows compassion even for the demons he must fight, many of whom were abused or abandoned as humans. Talk about whether understanding someone's pain changes how we judge what they do.
