Avengers: Endgame: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and some language.

A three-hour finale that rewards fans who have followed the series, with grief at its center as much as action. It opens with a father turning around to find his wife and children gone, and before it ends beloved heroes die, one deliberately falling to their death to save others, and a young child loses a parent. Fights include a beheading with a brief spurt of blood, a bitter hero killing gang members with a sword, and an epic final battle. Thor spends much of the film drunk and depressed, played partly for laughs. With at least eight s-words, the language is stronger than earlier Avengers films. Best from 13.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Long battles with stabbings, impalings, shootings and disintegrations, and several characters die. A villain is beheaded with blood briefly visible, an arm is hacked off, and an embittered hero kills a crime boss and his men with a sword.

Language

Moderate

At least eight s-words plus bullshit, son of a bitch, dickhead, bitch, pissed and pissant, and God's name misused about eight times, including two goddamns. One possible f-word is too muffled to make out.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Couples kiss and embrace, Thor and others are shirtless for long stretches, and heroes make crude jokes admiring another hero's rear end. No sex scenes or nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Thor copes with guilt by drinking heavily and is drunk or tipsy for much of the film, surrounded by beer bottles and barrels. The movie plays his depression and drinking largely for laughs.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Grief runs through the film, starting with a mother and children vanishing from their backyard. Expect monstrous armies, near drownings, and major heroes' deaths: one chooses to fall to their death to save others, and a small child's parent is shown badly burned and dying.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Death of a child

Worth talking about

Each hero handles loss differently, from Thor's drinking to Hawkeye's rage. What are healthy and unhealthy ways to cope with grief?
