Ford v Ferrari: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for some language and peril.

A thrilling, old-fashioned racing drama about Ford's 1960s push to beat Ferrari at Le Mans, best for families with kids about 13 and up. Language is the main issue: Plugged In counted more than 25 s-words and one f-word, plus plenty of milder swearing. Race scenes feature violent crashes, cars bursting into flames, and a driver catching fire. A main character, a devoted father, dies in a crash near the end, and the film shows the loss through his wife and young son. Men drink and smoke throughout, true to the era. There is no sexual content beyond a married couple's flirting.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent realistic race crashes with smashed cars, explosions and fire; a driver is pulled from a burning wreck, and a fuel spill sets a man ablaze. Two friends brawl in the street, and a wrench is thrown in anger.

Language

Moderate

Plugged In counted one f-word and more than 25 s-words, along with 'a--hole,' 'son of a bitch,' 'goddamn,' 'bloody' and 'prick.' An executive uses an ethnic slur for Italians.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A married couple kisses, embraces and trades flirty, suggestive lines. An executive jokes about returning soldiers and the baby boom. No sex scenes or nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Smoking and drinking fit the 1960s setting: executives drink liquor in meetings, the couple shares beer and whiskey, and Shelby comes to after a night surrounded by empty beer bottles. He also gulps heart pills when stressed.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Crashes are loud, fast and fiery, with drivers in danger from failed brakes or flames. A main character dies in a crash late in the film, and the scenes afterward with his family are sad.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Shelby and Miles bend the rules and fight with corporate bosses to win. Ask your teen whether their loyalty to each other justified the shortcuts, and what the film says about winning at any cost.
