Hunt for the Wilderpeople: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements including violent content, and for some language.

A funny, offbeat adventure that tweens can enjoy with a parent who is ready for a few sad moments. Ricky, a city foster kid, ends up on the run in the New Zealand bush with his gruff foster father while a national manhunt builds around them. A loving foster parent dies suddenly early on, a wild boar fatally wounds a dog, and a pig is killed for food with visible blood. There are guns, injuries and moderate swearing, plus a running misunderstanding that wrongly suggests a man molested Ricky. The losses, bloody moments and language are why we suggest 12.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A pig is killed with a knife and bleeds, a boar attack leaves a dog with a fatal, bloody wound, hunters and police point guns, a man is accidentally shot in the backside, and there is a brief fistfight and a car chase.

Language

Moderate

Moderate: s-words, piss, bastard, ass and dick, plus Christ as an exclamation and a rude gesture at police. One guide counted about 30 obscenities and profanities; no f-words are noted.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sexual content. An innocent remark leads hunters to wrongly assume Ricky's foster father molested him, and the false rumor follows them through the manhunt. It is played for laughs, and nothing like that happens.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Hec and a few other adults smoke cigarettes, usually after long hikes. There are passing comic references to joints and to cocaine, but no drug use or drinking is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The sudden death of a loving foster parent, a funeral, a dog dying after a boar attack, and tense chases by armed hunters and police may upset sensitive kids.

Sensitive topics

  • Animal death
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Ricky and Hec start out judging each other harshly and end up as family. Ask your kids what changed their minds and what makes someone family.
