The Good Place: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.

A clever, warm afterlife comedy that works for young teens and up watching with family. A selfish woman wakes up in a heaven-like 'Good Place' she did not earn and enlists an ethics professor to help her become a better person, raising real questions about morality. The afterlife swaps curses for 'fork' and 'shirt,' so the language stays mild, but sex jokes are common, adults drink, and drugs come up in jokes. Deaths are shown as slapstick, and the series finale is deeply emotional. Netflix lists it as TV-14, and the steady crude humor makes about 13 a sensible starting age.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Comic but sometimes bloody. Each main character's death is shown as a slapstick accident, demons punch and threaten people, and a trolley-problem simulation splatters characters with blood. Torture in the Bad Place is mostly described, not shown.

Language

Mild

Swearing is censored in the afterlife, so characters say 'fork' and 'shirt' constantly for laughs. Real words that slip through include 'ass,' 'bitch,' 'damn,' 'hell' and 'badass.' No uncensored f-words or s-words.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Lots of innuendo and sex jokes, including talk of masturbation, sex positions, erectile dysfunction pills and STDs. Couples kiss and are shown in bed fully clothed, and a sexual encounter is overheard. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink wine, cocktails and champagne, and one character downs about 30 glasses of wine in a night. Dialogue and jokes mention marijuana, magic mushrooms, Vicodin, cocaine and pill-popping, but drug use is talked about rather than shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Demons and the Bad Place are played for laughs, but the show deals openly with death and what comes after. The finale, in which characters decide when their existence ends, may hit sensitive viewers hard.

Worth talking about

The show argues that people can become better by trying, and that we owe things to each other. Ask your teen whether a good deed still counts if it is done for selfish reasons.
