Sing Street: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements including strong language and some bullying behavior, a suggestive image, drug material and teen smoking.
A joyful, music-filled coming-of-age story for teens watching with a parent. In 1980s Dublin, 15-year-old Conor starts a band to impress a girl while his parents' marriage falls apart and a bully and a harsh headmaster target him at his new school. Expect one spoken f-word, a homophobic slur and a racial slur, plenty of milder swearing, teens smoking cigarettes, and an older brother smoking hash in front of him. There is sex talk, a mother is seen with a vibrator, and sex is implied off screen. The bullying, drug use and language are why we suggest 13.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA bully punches Conor and blacks his eye, and schoolyard scuffles are frequent. The headmaster forcibly scrubs makeup off Conor's face under a running tap, the bully is said to come from an abusive home, and a girl's bruises hint her boyfriend hit her.
Language
StrongAbout 16 obscenities and profanities by one count, including one spoken f-word (another appears in writing), s-words and bitch, plus a homophobic slur, a racial slur that another boy calls out, and jokes about gay people.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo nudity or sex scenes. Characters talk about sex and a parent's affair, a mother is shown putting batteries in a vibrator before closing her door, sex is implied off screen, and a teen girl takes off with an older boyfriend.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongConor's adult brother smokes hash and cigarettes in front of him, teens smoke cigarettes in many scenes and lie about it, and there is casual drinking plus vomiting after a party.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing scary, but the parents' bitter fights and separation and the ongoing bullying may hit hard for kids whose own families are going through a breakup.
Sensitive topics

- Child abuse
Worth talking about
Conor answers bullies and a strict school with creativity instead of fists. Ask your teen how music or art can help people cope with stress at home.
