Palm Springs: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for sexual content, language throughout, drug use and some violence.
A sharp, raunchy time-loop romantic comedy for older teens and adults, not a family pick. Two wedding guests stuck reliving the same day respond with heavy drinking, drugs, casual sex and repeated deaths that reset each morning, including deliberate ones played for laughs. Sexual content is frequent but stops short of frontal nudity, the f-word is used dozens of times, and cocaine and mushrooms are taken. Underneath is a thoughtful story about depression, regret and choosing to move forward. The breezy treatment of suicide, along with the sex and drugs, is the main reason to wait until about 16 and watch together.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent but mostly comic. One man repeatedly kills another with arrows, electrocution, waterboarding and fire; characters die in crashes and explosions; a woman's fall knocks out teeth with heavy bleeding. Each death resets the next morning.
Language
StrongStrong throughout. Plugged In counted about 65 f-words and 40 s-words, plus 'bitch,' 'dick,' one c-word, crude gestures and about 30 misuses of God's name.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent but not explicit: a man is seen masturbating from the chest up, a woman receives oral sex in a bathroom, a couple strips to underwear before sex offscreen, a bare male rear, penis tattoos, and graphic sex talk.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongHeavy drinking throughout, including drunk driving and jokes about being alcoholics. The leads take mushrooms and hallucinate, wedding guests use cocaine, and meth smoking is described. None of it carries consequences.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateRepeated on-screen deaths, some chosen on purpose, such as stepping in front of a truck, are played as dark comedy. Scenes of one man hunting and torturing another, and the despair of being trapped, may unsettle.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
Worth talking about
The loop makes dying look painless and reversible. Talk about why real despair is different, and who your teen could turn to if life ever felt like the same bad day on repeat.
