I Lost My Body: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A haunting French animated drama for older teens and adults, not for kids expecting a cartoon. A severed hand crawls across Paris looking for its owner, a lonely young man whose parents died in a car crash when he was a boy. The bandsaw accident that takes the hand is bloody, a pigeon is strangled, and rats are fought off with fire. Expect occasional f-words, a brief interrupted sex scene with bare breasts, and a night of heavy drinking that ends in a fight. The tone is melancholy, and late in the film the despondent hero makes a dangerous leap from a rooftop. Best for about 15 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA hand is cut off by a bandsaw, with blood. The car crash that kills the boy's parents is revisited in flashbacks and on his tape recorder. A pigeon is strangled, an eyeball is squashed, the hand fights subway rats, and two men trade punches.
Language
ModerateOccasional strong language, including the f-word, plus 'shit,' 'ass,' 'goddamn,' 'crap' and 'pissed off.' Reviewers differ on how often; the BBFC called the strong language infrequent.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA couple's sex is interrupted, with the woman's bare breasts briefly shown and a crude drawing of a penis in the scene. A man makes an oral-sex gesture to needle a friend.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateThe hero drinks heavily alone in a bar out of frustration and then gets into a fight. Characters smoke cigarettes and a cigar.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMore eerie than gory: the crawling hand is chased by rats, a dog and traffic. Repeated flashbacks to the parents' fatal crash and the hero's slide into hopelessness are heavy to watch.
