Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language, some drug and sexual content.
An inventive, bittersweet romance about memory that rewards thoughtful older teens. After a painful breakup, Joel learns his ex has had him erased from her mind, so he signs up for the same procedure, and we travel through his memories as they vanish. Expect frequent f-words, marijuana smoking, heavy drinking including drunk driving, implied sex, brief nudity, and a memory of Joel being caught masturbating as a boy. There's almost no violence, though one childhood memory shows him being bullied. The strong language and on-screen drug use are why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
MildVery little. In a childhood memory, bullies pressure young Joel into hitting a dead or injured bird with a hammer and then rough him up. An angry wife hits a man, and a couple playfully pretend to smother each other with a pillow.
Language
StrongFrequent strong language: one count found about 25 f-words and more than a dozen s-words, plus roughly 35 misuses of God's name and words like bitch, pussy and a gay slur.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA childhood memory shows Joel caught by his mother masturbating over a pornographic comic, with a bare breast briefly visible in the image. Two characters strip to underwear before implied off-screen sex. Also groping, a woman in underwear, brief male rear nudity and an affair.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongCharacters smoke marijuana on screen, and one woman babbles while high in front of her boss. Clementine drinks heavily, spikes her coffee with whiskey and crashes a car while drunk. Cigarettes, beer and sedatives also appear.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNo real scares, but dreamlike sequences of memories collapsing, faces blurring and Joel fleeing through vanishing places can be disorienting, and the breakup is genuinely sad.

Worth talking about
If you could erase a painful memory, would you? The film suggests heartbreak and happy memories come bundled together; talk about whether that's true.
