Hacks: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A sharp, very adult comedy for older teens and parents rather than family movie night. A veteran Las Vegas stand-up and a young comedy writer clash, then bond, over five seasons about ageism, sexism and ambition. Expect constant f-words, crude sex jokes, simulated sex and some topless nudity in season 3, plus lots of drinking, vaping and occasional cocaine, molly and marijuana use. Heavier moments include a parent's death and funeral, an episode with suicide as a theme, and a series finale built around a cancer diagnosis and a planned assisted suicide. The swearing, sex and drugs make it best for 16 and up.
What's in it
Violence
MildMostly yelling, threats and blackmail. One character slaps another, a past act of arson against an ex-husband's house is a running joke, a woman smashes a room with a sledgehammer, and someone is hit by a self-driving car. No gore.
Language
StrongStrong and constant. F-words and s-words fill most episodes; Plugged In counted nine f-words and two c-words in one season 4 episode, plus 'bitch,' 'whore,' 'dick' and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names.
Sex and nudity
StrongFrequent crude sex talk and simulated sex, including same-sex and extramarital relationships. Season 3 has two extended shots of topless women and male nudity from behind, a nightmare briefly shows a fake-looking full-frontal image, and a character sends a nude selfie.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongDrinking, often to excess, runs through the series, along with cigarettes, cigars and vaping. Characters sometimes use marijuana, molly or cocaine; in season 4 the writers take drugs on a night out and a struggling performer is fed cocaine so she can go on.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateNo horror, but real emotional weight: a parent dies and a funeral follows, one episode deals with suicide, and the series finale centers on a main character's cancer diagnosis and plan for an assisted suicide abroad.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
- Death of a parent
Worth talking about
Deborah and Ava hurt each other often and still choose to keep working together. Ask your teen where the line falls between a demanding mentor and a mistreating one.
