Adolescence: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A gripping, emotionally punishing four-part drama that parents and teens of about 15 and up can watch together and talk through. A 13-year-old boy is arrested for the murder of a girl from his school, and each episode, filmed in one unbroken shot, follows the fallout. The stabbing is seen only in distant security footage, but the boy's terror, a school fight and a tense interview with a psychologist are hard to watch. Language is frequent and strong, and the story turns on online bullying, a nude photo shared without consent and misogynistic 'incel' ideas. No sex or drug use is shown.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateThe fatal stabbing of a 13-year-old girl appears only in grainy, distant CCTV footage with no visible gore. A boy is punched at school and bloodied, characters threaten each other, and armed police storm a family home.
Language
StrongFrequent f-words from adults and kids alike (Plugged In counted 12 in the first episode), plus s-words, misuse of God's name, and 'nonce,' British slang for a pedophile, shouted and spray-painted.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sexual activity or nudity is shown. Dialogue covers teen sex, porn and a girl's topless photo passed around school; a strip search is talked through aloud; photos of women in underwear appear on screen.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildVery little. A few characters mention wanting a cigarette or allude to smoking. No drinking or drug use is noted.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateIntensely tense: a terrified boy wets himself during an armed dawn raid and is processed into custody, a one-on-one session with a psychologist turns menacing, and the finale lingers on his parents' guilt and anguish.

- Death of a child
