Lord of the Flies (2026): parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A faithful but brutal four-part adaptation of the classic novel, for teens who can handle seeing children kill children. Schoolboys stranded on an island slide from order into savagery, and the series shows it more graphically than many readers picture: bloody pig hunts, rotting corpses, a boy stabbed to death by a frenzied crowd and another dying slowly from a head wound. A young child also dies in a fire. Language, sex and substances are nearly absent, so the age rests on the violence and disturbing images. The book is commonly taught to students around this age.
What's in it
Violence
StrongPigs, piglets among them, are speared and clubbed while squealing. Boys beat and torment each other, one boy is stabbed to death by a frenzied crowd, and another's skull is cracked by a thrown rock in a drawn-out, bloody death. Adult corpses appear in gory detail.
Language
MildMild and infrequent: "bloody," one "ass," a couple of uses of God's name, and taunts such as "fatty" and "Piggy" aimed at an overweight boy.
Sex and nudity
NoneNo sex or romance. The boys spend much of the time shirtless in school shorts, and one strips to his underwear to swim, but nothing is sexualized.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo drinking, drugs or smoking are shown anywhere in the series, and none are mentioned.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained menace as the group turns on its weakest members. Disturbing images include a pilot's fly-covered corpse, a rotting pig's head on a stake that seems to speak, and small children endangered by fire and each other. Flashbacks show Ralph's mother's illness and death.
