Deadpool & Wolverine: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.

A gory, foul-mouthed comedy for older teens and adults, not for the PG-13 Marvel crowd. The two heroes slice, shoot and behead waves of enemies, joke and dance through bloodbaths, and repeatedly maul each other. Plugged In counted more than 120 f-words. There is no nudity this time, but crude sexual jokes never stop, including gags about a dog's arousal and necrophilia. Wolverine drinks heavily to numb his guilt, and cocaine is a running joke. The sex scenes of the first film are gone, but the graphic gore and nonstop language still put it at 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Nonstop and bloody: beheadings, limbs sliced or shot off, impalings, and a skeleton swung as a weapon. A villain peels a man's skin off with her mind. The leads stab and slash each other in long fights only their healing powers survive.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted more than 120 f-words (about 10 of them "motherf--ker"), 30-plus s-words and two c-words, plus "d--k," "b--ch," "a--hole" and many more, along with middle-finger gestures.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

No sex scenes or nudity, though quick flashbacks replay steamy moments from the earlier films. Crude sexual jokes run throughout, including references to pegging, masturbation, necrophilia and a dog's arousal, and weapons are jabbed into groins with sexual commentary.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Wolverine drinks heavily throughout to dull his guilt and at one point swigs rubbing alcohol. Deadpool rattles off slang for cocaine, his roommate jokes about withdrawal, and adults drink and smoke.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The shocks are mostly gore: a dead hero's skeleton, a mound of bloody skulls, a crucified skeleton. A villain plans to wipe out whole universes, but the comedy undercuts most of the tension.

Worth talking about

Wolverine sees himself as the worst version of himself and thinks he can't be forgiven. Can someone who has badly let people down still make it right?
