Violent Night: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references.

A gleefully gory action comedy for older teens and adults, not a family Christmas movie despite its Santa premise. A hard-drinking Santa takes on mercenaries holding a wealthy family hostage, and the film plays dozens of bloody kills for laughs, with stabbings, shootings, a sledgehammer, a woodchipper and Home Alone-style traps set by a young girl. There are about 50 f-words plus other harsh terms. Santa drinks heavily, gets drunk and vomits. Sexual content stops at kissing and crude references. The jokey tone makes the carnage feel light, which is part of why we suggest 16 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant and graphic: people are shot, stabbed and impaled with ornaments and ice skates, fed into a woodchipper, crushed with a sledgehammer, beheaded and torn in two, with blood spray and gory remains. Santa stitches up his own bloody wound.

Language

Strong

Around 50 f-words and more than 25 s-words, plus "motherf---er," "c--ksucker," "bitch," "whore" and "asshole," with God's and Jesus' names misused several times.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sex or nudity. A married couple kisses, there are a handful of crude references to genitals and sex, and a man is stripped to his boxer shorts during a torture scene.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Santa drinks heavily, beer in a pub and in his sleigh and brandy with the cookies, gets very drunk and vomits on someone. Other adults drink wine, vodka and cocktails with no consequences.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

A family, including a young girl, is held at gunpoint for most of the film, with guns and knives pressed on hostages. The comic tone softens the threat, but the gory sights can disturb.

Worth talking about

Ask whether the jokes and holiday music made the violence feel less serious, and why filmmakers might pair gore with comedy.
