Die Hard: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R.
A landmark 1980s action thriller best saved for older teens who can handle a lot of blood and swearing. A New York cop battles a crew of armed thieves who seize a Los Angeles office tower during a Christmas party, and the body count climbs steadily through gunfights, explosions and point-blank executions. The language is relentless, with dozens of f-words. A party guest snorts cocaine, a couple is caught in the middle of sex with brief toplessness, and pinups of nude women appear. Age 16 reflects the bloody, sustained violence combined with constant profanity and drug use.
What's in it
Violence
StrongNearly nonstop gunfights, explosions and brawls. Roughly a dozen people die, several from shots to the head at close range and one hanged by a chain. The hero ends up battered and bloody, his bare feet sliced by broken glass.
Language
StrongPervasive. One count found more than 40 f-words, including "motherf--ker," and about 20 s-words, plus frequent misuse of God's name, "a--hole," "b--ch" and crude references to male anatomy.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA door swings open on a party couple having sex, briefly showing the woman's bare chest. The hero eyes pinup posters of nude women, and there are sexual wisecracks and ogling. He and his wife kiss.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA smug executive snorts cocaine several times at the office party. Champagne and cocktails flow, and the hero chain-smokes, as do many of the cops, thieves and reporters.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateHostages are held at gunpoint for hours, and two civilians are shot dead at close range. Tense cat-and-mouse chases, a rooftop rigged with explosives and a plunge down an elevator shaft keep the pressure high.
Worth talking about
The film paints police brass, the FBI and TV reporters as fools and leans on stereotypes of foreigners as villains. Why do action movies so often cast outsiders as the bad guys?
