Deadpool: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity.
An R-rated superhero comedy for older teens and adults, nothing like the Marvel movies kids are used to. Violence is gory and constant: beheadings, head shots, a man burned, and long torture scenes. Wade and his girlfriend have a lengthy, played-for-laughs sex montage with bare breasts, a strip club shows topless and fully nude dancers, and Wade fights naked. Plugged In counted about 75 f-words, and crude sexual jokes fill nearly every scene. Fans of the character will lobby hard for it, but the sex and nudity put it at 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongBloody and nearly nonstop: heads cut off with swords, gory head shots, bones snapped, and a man burned before he is killed. Wade is tortured at length, including waterboarding and near-suffocation, and later saws off his own hand to escape cuffs.
Language
StrongProfanity in almost every scene: Plugged In counted about 75 f-words and 40 s-words, plus "motherf--ker," "p---y," "c--k," "a--hole" and more. The n-word is heard, and sexual innuendo is constant.
Sex and nudity
StrongWade meets Vanessa while she works as an escort, and a comic montage shows them having sex through a year of holidays, with bare breasts. A strip club shows topless dancers and a fully nude woman, Wade fights naked, and masturbation is implied.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateMuch of the story is set in a bar where Wade and his friends drink, sometimes until drunk. A character smokes, and cocaine comes up a couple of times in dialogue. No drug use is shown.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateWade is diagnosed with terminal cancer, and his torture in a secret clinic is drawn out and grim. Close-ups of his scarred, disfigured skin can upset some viewers, though the jokes keep it from feeling like horror.
Worth talking about
Deadpool hides fear and pain behind nonstop jokes. How does humor help people cope, and when does it keep them from facing what's wrong?
