Baby Driver: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence and language throughout.

A stylish, music-driven heist thriller for older teens, with frequent gunplay and very heavy swearing. A young getaway driver who keeps his earbuds in to drown out tinnitus tries to break free of a crime boss's crew, and the story builds to shootouts, deadly crashes and sudden, bloody killings, including of sympathetic characters. Flashbacks replay the car crash that killed his parents. Characters talk crudely about sex and the camera ogles women, though nothing explicit is shown. Age 16 reflects the bloody violence and nearly 60 f-words.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Frequent and often made to look cool. Robbers kill an armored-car guard and a crewmate, a store clerk is likely killed off screen, a weapons deal ends in a deadly shootout, and a man is skewered by a pole. Bloody bodies, a corpse in a trunk, people run down.

Language

Strong

Very heavy. One count found nearly 60 f-words and at least 20 s-words, plus misuse of God's and Jesus' names, "b--ch," "a--hole" and an ableist slur aimed at the hero.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

No sex or nudity, but a crooked couple make out in a back seat and joke crudely about role-playing and sex. The camera lingers on a woman's body and cleavage, and the young leads share sweet kisses.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A crew member suggests a couple rob to feed a drug habit, and drugs come up in conversation. The boss smokes and adults drink wine at dinner. No drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Shootouts and chases are tense, and several characters die suddenly and brutally. Flashbacks repeatedly show the crash that killed the hero's parents when he was small, including his father grabbing his mother by the hair beforehand.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Domestic abuse

Worth talking about

Baby is likable, but he keeps driving for people who hurt others. How much do good intentions count when someone keeps helping people do harm?
