Love Actually: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for sexuality, nudity and language.

A warm, sprawling British romantic comedy for older teens and adults, not a family Christmas film. About ten loosely linked stories follow people in love around London in the weeks before Christmas. Two body doubles on a film set appear naked while simulating sex acts, played for comedy, with breasts and buttocks shown but genitals kept out of view. Sexual jokes are frequent, and there are several f-words. Storylines include a widower and his stepson after the mother's funeral, a married man tempted by his assistant, and a woman caring for a mentally ill brother. Some jokes about weight have dated badly.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Almost none. A man in a psychiatric hospital lashes out at his sister during a visit, and there is a minor fender bender. No injuries or blood are shown.

Language

Strong

Several f-words (guides differ, from 'a couple' to about a dozen) and several s-words, plus 'wanker,' 'bugger,' 'bloody,' 'arse,' and frequent misuse of God's and Jesus' names. One guide reports swearing in a conversation with a child.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Two stand-ins on a film set are naked in several scenes while simulating sex acts, including oral sex; the woman's breasts and bottom are shown, genitals are not. A rock star performs naked behind a guitar, a couple starts undressing, and sexual jokes are frequent.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Characters drink at a wedding and at parties, and one guest is tipsy. A washed-up rock star talks about his past heroin habit and jokes on TV that kids should become pop stars to get free drugs.

Scary or intense scenes

Mild

Nothing scary. The sad moments are a funeral for a young boy's mother, a wife's quiet heartbreak over her husband's betrayal, and a woman's sacrifices for her mentally ill brother.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Several storylines treat pursuing a married person or a junior employee as romantic; teens can talk about where the film's idea of love crosses lines.
