Amélie: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for sexual content.
A whimsical, warm-hearted French comedy about a shy Paris waitress who secretly improves strangers' lives, with enough sexual content that it suits older teens rather than kids. There's no real violence or strong profanity. The concerns are comic sex scenes, including a quick montage of couples climaxing with brief bare breasts and a noisy encounter in a café restroom, plus a love interest who works in a porn shop. Amélie's mother is killed in a darkly comic accident when Amélie is small. The sexual content is why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
MildLittle violence. Amélie's mother dies in a quick, darkly comic moment when a suicidal tourist falls on her from a cathedral roof, and a grocer belittles and slaps his disabled assistant. Amélie's revenge pranks are harmless.
Language
MildMild. Movieguide noted only one very mild obscenity plus some sexual slang, and Common Sense lists very little profanity. Most crude talk is about sex rather than swearing.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA quick montage shows couples climaxing, with brief bare breasts. Two café regulars have loud, rattling sex in a restroom, Amélie's first lovers appear briefly, and Nino's job at a porn shop brings shelves of sex toys and brief glimpses of nude dancing. Played for comedy.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateCafé patrons and regulars drink wine and other alcohol often, and several characters smoke cigarettes. No drug use was noted.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNot scary. The mother's sudden death, a lonely childhood and a goldfish that keeps leaping from its bowl are treated with whimsy, though the father's grief and withdrawal may register with sensitive viewers.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Suicide
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Amélie happily fixes other people's lives but avoids taking risks in her own. Why might helping others feel easier than going after what you want?
