Somebody Somewhere: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A warm, low-key comedy-drama about grief and friendship that suits older teens watching with a parent. Sam, a woman in her 40s, is back in her Kansas hometown after caring for her sister through a fatal cancer, and she slowly finds her people among a group of misfits who love to sing. There is no violence, but the swearing is heavy, with many f-words per episode and the c-word in later seasons, along with frank sexual jokes and brief rear nudity. Sam's mother is an alcoholic in and out of rehab. Age 15 reflects the language and adult humor rather than anything graphic.
What's in it
Violence
NoneNo fighting or injuries are reported in any season. Conflict comes from family arguments, tense silences and blowups between Sam and her sister, all verbal.
Language
StrongStrong and constant. One review counted 14 f-words and 11 s-words in the first episode, and eight f-words plus three uses of the c-word in the season 3 opener. A subplot involves pillows embroidered with the c-word.
Sex and nudity
ModerateMostly talk: a crude joke about "just the tip," sexual banter, and same-sex and straight couples kissing. Reviewers note brief nudity, including a man's bare rear. Dating is part of the story, but no explicit sex scenes are reported.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongSam's mother is an alcoholic whose drinking hurts the family; she goes to rehab in season 1 and is back in care later. Adults drink at dinners and parties, Sam's sister gets drunk, and edibles appear at a poker night.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing scary. The weight is emotional: Sam's sister died of cancer just before the story begins, and Sam is often lonely, crying alone in her car and feeling left behind as others move on.
Sensitive topics
- Addiction
Worth talking about
Sam feels stuck while everyone around her seems to move forward. What helps people find their footing again after losing someone close?
