Black Bag: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language including some sexual references, and some violence.
A sleek, talky spy thriller for older teens and adults, built around a married pair of British intelligence agents and a hunt for a traitor among their colleagues. Most of the tension comes from dinner-table mind games, but there are a few bloody moments, including a head shot and a hand stabbed with a knife. Expect more than 40 f-words, constant talk of affairs and sex, a married couple heading to bed, and a host who secretly drugs his guests' food. Lies and manipulation drive every scene. The language and sexual references are why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSparse but sharp: a man is shot in the head and the camera lingers on the bloody wall, a woman stabs a man's hand with a dinner knife, a man is poisoned and convulses, and a drone strike leaves a burning body.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted more than 40 f-words and 12 s-words, along with "son of a bitch," "prick," "dick" and several misuses of God's and Jesus' names.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA married couple kisses and heads to bed for sex that is not shown. Women appear in lingerie, and dialogue often and sometimes graphically covers affairs, an orgy, masturbation, lap dancing and erotic fiction.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateAdults drink whiskey, wine, shots and cocktails, and one man spills secrets while drunk. Someone vapes. The host secretly slips a drug into his guests' food, and a character's past ecstasy use is mentioned.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMostly suspense and paranoia. A poisoning, a drone strike and a sudden shooting are startling, and tense lie-detector and interrogation scenes build unease, but nothing is drawn out or gory.
Worth talking about
The characters lie constantly, even to people they love. Ask what makes the central marriage work despite the secrets, and whether trust and honesty are the same thing.
