Civil War: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong violent content, bloody/disturbing images, and language throughout.
A grim, unflinching war drama for older teens and adults about journalists crossing a United States torn apart by a second civil war. The violence is realistic and frequent: close-range shootings, executions, bodies hanging from a bridge, a mass grave, and a person set on fire. A racially motivated killing is one of the most tense scenes. Expect more than 45 f-words, drinking, smoking and a shared joint, but no sexual content. Major characters die. The violence and disturbing images are why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic and frequent: soldiers execute prisoners with head shots, a suicide bomber blows apart a crowd, people are hanged, tortured and set on fire, and bloody corpses are dumped into a mass grave. A final battle storms Washington, D.C.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted more than 45 f-words and about a dozen s-words, plus "damn," "bastard" and "bullshit." There is an obscene gesture, an ableist slur and some racist remarks.
Sex and nudity
NoneNo sexual content. A woman soaks in a bathtub with only her shoulders and knee visible, and a man leers at a young photographer.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongJournalists drink at a hotel bar and pass a liquor bottle around; one drinks nightly and passes out. Characters, including a young photographer, smoke cigarettes and share what appears to be a joint, and smoking is sometimes framed as cool.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongIntense from start to finish. Armed men interrogate the heroes at gunpoint beside a pit of bodies, gunfire erupts without warning, and the story shows the lasting toll on war photographers through haunting memories of past atrocities.
Sensitive topics
- Racism
Worth talking about
Ask why the film tells this war through journalists' cameras, and what responsibility photographers have when they witness violence.
