War Movies
The best war films aren't really about winning. They're about what war does to the people inside it, soldiers and civilians alike, and they make you feel that rather than cheer it. This list mixes the landmarks with the strongest recent films, from the trenches of the First World War to a single house in Iraq.
They tend to fall into three kinds. Immersion films put you in the moment and keep you there: 1917, Dunkirk, Warfare, the opening of Saving Private Ryan. Witness films look at what war does to people who never chose to fight: The Zone of Interest, Grave of the Fireflies, 20 Days in Mariupol. And a few use war for something stranger, as satire or nightmare: Jojo Rabbit, Inglourious Basterds, Apocalypse Now.
Almost everything here is violent, but not equally. Dunkirk and Greyhound are tense with very little blood, and the best starting points for teenagers. Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge and All Quiet on the Western Front are graphic, and Come and See and Beasts of No Nation are among the hardest watches on this site. Several are true stories; see Movies Based on True Stories and Documentaries Worth Watching.
1917
Movie · 2019Two British soldiers cross enemy territory to deliver a message that could save sixteen hundred men, filmed to look like one continuous shot. Sam Mendes keeps you at their shoulders the entire time, which makes it the most immersive film here. Some grisly sights, but not a gore film.
Saving Private Ryan
Movie · 1998The Omaha Beach landing that opens it changed how war is filmed, and it's still the most overwhelming sequence of its kind. Afterward it becomes a patrol story about whether one man's life is worth risking a whole squad. Very graphic; this is the benchmark the rest are measured against.
Dunkirk
Movie · 2017The 1940 evacuation told on land, sea and air across three timelines that converge. Christopher Nolan keeps the blood almost entirely offscreen and the tension close to unbearable, which makes it the best intense war film for teenagers. Very little dialogue; turn the sound up.
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Movie · 2022The great German anti-war novel, filmed in German and with modern fury. It follows a teenage volunteer from patriotic excitement into the trenches of the war's last years, and won the Oscar for international feature. Brutal, graphic and bleak by design. Subtitled.
Warfare
Movie · 2025One Navy SEAL platoon, one house in Ramadi in 2006, and a firefight told in close to real time, rebuilt from the memories of the men who were there. Co-directed by Ray Mendoza, who served in it, and Alex Garland. Almost no music, no speeches, and extremely intense.
Hacksaw Ridge
Movie · 2016Desmond Doss, an Army medic who refused to carry a weapon, saving wounded men on Okinawa. The first half is a quieter small-town story; the second is some of the most graphic combat ever filmed. Mel Gibson directs both halves with total conviction, which is its strength and its problem.
The Zone of Interest
Movie · 2023The commandant of Auschwitz and his family enjoy a pleasant life on the other side of the camp wall. You never see inside; you hear it. Jonathan Glazer's film is cold, formally daring and more disturbing than any battle on this list. Mostly in German, rated PG-13, and unforgettable.
Civil War
Movie · 2024A near-future America at war with itself, seen through a team of journalists driving to Washington. Alex Garland withholds the politics on purpose, so the film is about what war photographers see rather than who's right. Kirsten Dunst is excellent, and one roadside scene with Jesse Plemons is terrifying.
Jojo Rabbit
Movie · 2019A ten-year-old in the Hitler Youth whose imaginary friend is a buffoonish Hitler, played by the director, Taika Waititi. A satire that turns tender, its argument against hate lands better with teenagers than most solemn films do. Be ready for one devastating moment midway.
Greyhound
Movie · 2020Tom Hanks as a US Navy commander escorting a convoy across the Atlantic in 1942, hunted by U-boats. Lean, procedural and nearly all action, with no gore to speak of. The pick if you want a war film that's tense rather than traumatic. Hanks also wrote the screenplay.
Apocalypse Now
Movie · 1979A captain heads upriver in Vietnam to kill a renegade colonel, and the war turns into a fever dream. The helicopter attack and the surf-obsessed colonel are iconic, and the last act is slow and strange on purpose. Watch the original theatrical cut first; the longer versions are for converts.
The Hurt Locker
Movie · 2008A bomb-disposal team in Iraq, and a sergeant who seems to need the danger. Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the directing Oscar for it, and the tension in each defusing sequence is almost physical. Handheld and sparse, with little in the way of plot.
Inglourious Basterds
Movie · 2009Quentin Tarantino's World War II revenge fantasy, more about long, nerve-shredding conversations than battles. Christoph Waltz won an Oscar as the SS officer, and the opening farmhouse scene is among the best things Tarantino has written. Bloody in bursts, and much of it is subtitled.
Das Boot
Movie · 1981A German U-boat crew in 1941, crushed into a steel tube for most of the film. Wolfgang Petersen made claustrophobia into its own kind of action, and the depth-charge scenes still tighten every muscle. The theatrical cut is long and the director's cut longer; both reward you. Subtitled.
They Shall Not Grow Old
Movie · 2018Peter Jackson restored and colorized First World War footage and laid the voices of veterans over it, and the soldiers suddenly look like people you might know. There's no narrator and no historian, only the men who were there. Some graphic images of the dead.
20 Days in Mariupol
Movie · 2023An Associated Press team inside the Ukrainian city during the first weeks of Russia's 2022 siege, and the footage they risked everything to get out. It won the Oscar for best documentary. Dead and dying children are shown; it is not easy, and it isn't meant to be.
Grave of the Fireflies
Movie · 1988A Studio Ghibli film about a teenage boy and his little sister trying to survive in Japan in the last months of the war. It's animated but not for young children: one of the saddest films ever made, and honest from its first scene about where it's going. Released as a double bill with My Neighbor Totoro.
Beasts of No Nation
Movie · 2015A boy in an unnamed West African country is forced to become a child soldier under Idris Elba's terrifying commander. Cary Joji Fukunaga films it beautifully, which somehow makes it harder to watch. Graphic violence involving children; a serious film you'll need a break after.
Come and See
Movie · 1985A Belarusian boy joins the partisans in 1943 and witnesses Nazi atrocities against villagers. Many critics call it the most harrowing war film ever made, and it earns that. Not gory in the Hollywood sense, but the final hour is close to unbearable. Subtitled, and only for when you're ready.
Paths of Glory
Movie · 1957Stanley Kubrick's anti-war breakthrough: a French general orders an impossible attack in 1916, and three soldiers are tried for cowardice when it fails. Kirk Douglas is the colonel defending them. Short, furious and still painfully relevant, and the black and white hardly feels its age.
