Das Boot: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for some war violence and brief language.

A tense, claustrophobic submarine drama for older teens, following a German U-boat crew in 1941 as they hunt Allied convoys and are hunted in return. Most of the strain is psychological: long depth-charge attacks, flooding, and a dive past the boat's limits that strands the crew on the seabed. Violence includes burning sailors leaping from a torpedoed tanker and a deadly air raid. Expect heavy drinking, crude sailor talk, bare bottoms and at least one f-word. The sustained dread, drinking and crude humor are why we suggest 15. Most versions are subtitled, and the director's cut runs nearly three and a half hours.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Depth charges and bombs injure crewmen, with some bloody wounds. Sailors on a burning tanker leap into the sea and are left behind, and an air raid kills several characters, including major ones. A drunk officer fires a gun in a bar.

Language

Moderate

Mostly crude sailor talk in subtitles: s-words, bastards, asshole and at least one f-word, plus coarse references to brothels and body parts.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Crewmen drop their pants for a lice inspection, showing bare bottoms, and talk crudely about women, brothels and masturbation. A cabaret singer wears a skimpy dress and there is a drag act. No sex scenes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The opening party shows officers getting very drunk; one collapses in his own vomit and another urinates on a car. Sailors drink beer to celebrate a sinking, and smoking is constant.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Long depth-charge attacks with leaks spraying, lights failing and men waiting silently to die. A crewman panics and has to be restrained, and the boat sits trapped on the ocean floor for hours as air runs low.

Worth talking about

The film asks viewers to sympathize with men fighting for Nazi Germany, several of whom mock the regime. Can you feel for soldiers on the wrong side of a war, and what does that say about the people who send them?
