Jojo Rabbit: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for mature thematic content, some disturbing images, violence, and language.

A dark satirical comedy for teens about a 10-year-old Hitler Youth member in 1945 Germany whose imaginary friend is a buffoonish Hitler, and who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their house. The humor is broad, but the subject is not: hanged bodies in the town square, children sent into battle, and the sudden death of a parent, which the boy discovers himself. Expect one f-word, some s-words, constant antisemitic propaganda played for satire, and lots of smoking. The loss and disturbing images are why we suggest 13; younger kids may miss the satire.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A street battle leaves bodies in the road, and armed children are sent to fight. Jojo is hurt by a grenade, a boy snaps a rabbit's neck, and executed people hang in the square. A character is shot offscreen; imaginary Hitler shows a bloody head wound.

Language

Moderate

One f-word and about six s-words, per Plugged In, plus damn, hell, ass, goddamn and misuses of God's name. Characters spout antisemitic insults and Nazi propaganda as part of the satire.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Jojo develops a crush on the older teen girl hiding in his house and refuses when she offers him a pity kiss. Jokes touch on Nazi myths about Jews, breeding children for Germany, and an implied secret relationship between two officers. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A Nazi captain swigs from a flask in most of his scenes and acts sloppy, and Jojo's mother drinks wine, sometimes from the bottle. Imaginary Hitler keeps offering the 10-year-old cigarettes, and adults smoke often.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Gestapo officers search the house while a Jewish girl hides, building real fear. Hanged bodies are shown, and Jojo recognizes a parent among them, a crushing scene. Battle scenes put young kids in danger.

Worth talking about

Jojo believes everything he has been taught about Jewish people until he actually gets to know one. How do propaganda and peer pressure shape what kids believe, and what changes Jojo's mind?
