The Zone of Interest: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for thematic material, some suggestive material and smoking.

A quietly devastating Holocaust drama for mature teens studying the era, not a casual movie night. It follows the Auschwitz commandant's family living comfortably right next to the camp, and the horror is almost entirely heard rather than seen: gunshots, screams, the furnaces' glow and smoke. There's no gore and the language is mild, but children play with victims' teeth, a human bone turns up in a river, and the commandant is implied to use a prisoner for sex. The cumulative dread suits about 13 and up, ideally with some history background.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Almost nothing is shown directly, but gunshots, screams and beatings are heard constantly beyond the garden wall. A soldier orders a man drowned, a bone is found in a river, and blood is briefly washed off a shoe.

Language

Mild

Mild words such as 'bloody' and 'hell,' plus 'my God.' More troubling is the casual, dehumanizing way Jewish victims are discussed, including the term 'Jewess.'

Sex and nudity

Moderate

The commandant is implied to have sex with a woman prisoner brought to his office, which her captivity makes coercive; nothing is shown, but he is then seen washing himself. Otherwise swimsuits, a married couple's kiss and affectionate teens.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The commandant and his wife smoke cigarettes and cigars, and smoking is part of the MPA rating. Wine at dinners and a party, and a nanny drinks heavily alone one night. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained dread rather than scares: smoke and flames from the crematoria, screams at night, and a boy who locks his brother in a greenhouse and mimics gassing sounds. The ending shows the real gas chambers and victims' shoes at today's Auschwitz museum.

Sensitive topics

  • Racism
  • Sexual assault

Worth talking about

The family chooses not to see what happens over their wall. Talk about how ordinary people went along with the Holocaust, and what it takes to notice and refuse injustice close to home.
