Dunkirk: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for intense war experience and some language.
A gripping, nearly wordless survival story for teens with an interest in history, following soldiers, sailors and pilots during the 1940 evacuation of British troops from France. Expect relentless bombing, strafing and sinking ships, with many men drowning or trapped below deck, though very little blood is shown. A teenage civilian helper dies from a head injury, and one soldier quietly walks into the sea, apparently to end his life. Language is mostly mild apart from at least two f-words. The constant dread and the f-words are why we suggest 13; sensitive kids may find the drowning scenes hard.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSoldiers are shot on the beach, thrown into the air by bombs, and drown when ships are torpedoed; men swimming under an oil slick surface into flames. A teenage boy dies after a head injury. Bodies float in the surf, but blood is minimal.
Language
ModerateAt least two f-words and a few s-words, some hard to hear over the noise, plus several British uses of bloody, single uses of damn and hell, and a few exclamations using God's or Jesus' name.
Sex and nudity
NoneNo romance, kissing, sexual references or nudity. One soldier is seen squatting to relieve himself on the beach, which is crude but not sexual.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildRescued soldiers are handed bottles of beer on the way home, and a soldier digs a half-smoked cigarette out of an ashtray. No drunkenness or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongNear-constant tension: men trapped in flooding hulls in the dark, a pilot struggling in a sinking cockpit, and screaming dive bombers. A shell-shocked soldier lashes out, and another walks into the ocean, apparently to take his own life.
Sensitive topics
- Suicide
Worth talking about
Some soldiers act selfishly to survive while ordinary civilians sail into danger to rescue strangers. What makes people choose courage or self-preservation under that kind of pressure?
