Apocalypse Now: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for disturbing violent images, language, sexual content and some drug use.
A hallucinatory, deeply disturbing Vietnam War epic for older teens and adults, following an Army captain sent upriver to kill a renegade colonel. It includes gory deaths, a panicked massacre of civilians on a boat, severed heads, a machete killing intercut with the real slaughter of a water buffalo, frequent f-words and racial slurs, soldiers smoking pot and tripping on acid, and topless pinups and male full-frontal nudity. The longer Redux cut adds an implied sexual encounter. Graphic violence, drugs and nudity together are why we suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongSoldiers are shot, blown apart and speared. Panicked soldiers machine-gun civilians on a boat, then a wounded woman is shot dead. A severed head is dropped in a man's lap, a man is hacked to death, and a real water buffalo is slaughtered on camera.
Language
StrongFrequent f-words and motherf-, plus s-words, cocksucker and at least one c-word. Soldiers call the Vietnamese gooks and slopes, and a Black soldier uses the n-word.
Sex and nudity
StrongPlayboy Playmates dance provocatively for screaming troops, and pinup magazines show bare breasts. There is nonsexual full-frontal male nudity, and one scene shows a nude woman moving around a bed where a man lies. The Redux version adds soldiers undressing Playmates, with sex implied.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA young soldier takes LSD and is visibly high during a battle, and others smoke marijuana. The captain drinks himself into a stupor alone in a Saigon hotel room, and nearly everyone smokes cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongDread builds toward a compound strewn with corpses, hanging bodies and severed heads. A drunken breakdown, a sudden tiger attack, chaotic night firefights and the final killing make it disturbing throughout.

Worth talking about
The film suggests war can make ordinary people capable of terrible things. What is the movie saying about Kurtz, and about the officers who send Willard to kill him?
