Beasts of No Nation: parents' guide
Best for ages 18 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A devastating drama about a boy forced to become a child soldier in an unnamed West African civil war, best saved for adults. Agu loses his father and older brother to soldiers, is made to hack a prisoner to death with a machete, takes drugs with the other boys, and is sexually abused by his commander, which is implied rather than shown. A woman is raped and shot, and a small child is killed. Dozens of f-words. Netflix released it without an MPA rating. The sexual abuse of a child, drug use and extreme violence are why we suggest 18.
What's in it
Violence
StrongConstant, often casual killing: a captive hacked apart with machetes as an initiation, a woman shot in the head at close range, grenades set off in prisoners' mouths, and a toddler stomped to death. A woman is raped, then shot.
Language
StrongFrequent f-words and motherf- (the BBFC counted about 25 strong words), mostly shouted in battle or anger, plus s-words and some crude bathroom humor.
Sex and nudity
StrongThe commander's sexual abuse of Agu is implied, and a woman's rape is shown. Boys joke crudely about sex and women, and there is occasional nonsexual male full-frontal and female breast nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongChild soldiers smoke marijuana and take brown-brown, described as cocaine mixed with gunpowder; one boy burns gunpowder from a bullet to inhale it. A commander smokes what appears to be heroin from foil, and drugs are pushed on the youngest boys.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongOnce Agu's village falls, the film is sustained terror and moral horror: drugged children killing, burned bodies with exposed ribs, villages destroyed, and the boy's nightmares afterward. The performances make it extremely hard to watch.

Worth talking about
Agu is both a victim and someone who does terrible things. How should we think about responsibility when children are forced into violence?
