Crimson Peak: parents' guide
Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for bloody violence, some sexual content and brief strong language.
A lush gothic romance with ghosts, made for older teens and adults who can handle sudden, graphic gore. A young American writer marries a charming English baronet and moves into his crumbling mansion, where ghosts warn her about the family's secrets. Long stretches are more mood than menace, but the violence is brutal when it comes: a man's face smashed against a sink, repeated stabbings, a skull crushed with a shovel. There is also a sex scene with partial nudity, a secret incestuous relationship, one f-word, and the killing of the heroine's father. We suggest 17.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic and bloody: a man's head is smashed repeatedly into a sink until his face caves in, people are stabbed in the chest, face and side with spurting blood, a cheek is slashed in a knife fight, and a skull is crushed with a shovel.
Language
ModerateOne f-word and an s-word, plus mild British terms such as "bloody." Otherwise the dialogue is formal, in keeping with the period setting.
Sex and nudity
ModerateOne sex scene between a married couple: oral sex is implied, then they have sex with movement and part of his bare buttocks shown. A brother and sister are revealed as lovers, half-dressed and groping. A bath scene, a bare-breasted ghost and an erotic drawing are brief.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildGuests hold drinks at parties and someone mentions drinking too much. The heroine is slowly poisoned with tea that makes her cough blood, a plot point rather than drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongGrotesque, skeletal ghosts in deep red appear with screeching sounds, one with a cleaver lodged in its head, a corpse rises from a pit of red clay, and the house seems to bleed. Jump scares are fewer than in most horror, but the images are disturbing.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Domestic abuse
Worth talking about
Edith's dream of being a writer fades once she marries into the family. Talk about how charm can hide control, and how she finds her strength again.
