Warfare: parents' guide

17+our pick

Best for ages 17 and up. Rated R for intense war violence and bloody/grisly images, and language throughout.

A brutally realistic, nearly real-time combat film for older teens and adults, built from the memories of Navy SEALs pinned down in a house in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006. After a quiet start, an explosion leaves men with mangled legs, and much of what follows is screaming, bleeding, morphine and near-constant gunfire. Profanity is relentless, with roughly 50 f-words. Sexual content is limited to a suggestive workout video with bare buttocks and a brief glimpse of a wounded man's genitals during treatment. The graphic injuries and sustained intensity are why we suggest 17.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

An IED blast kills an interpreter outright, leaving body parts in the street, and maims two SEALs, whose shredded legs are shown at length during treatment. A grenade wounds others, a tank fires into a building, and insurgents are shot. Blood fills the frame.

Language

Strong

Constant profanity: Plugged In counted more than 50 f-words and about eight s-words, plus piss, misuses of God's name and crude hand gestures.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Before the mission, the platoon cheers at a racy 1980s-style workout music video whose dancers wear thong leotards that bare their buttocks, and some men copy the moves. A wounded man's genitals are briefly visible as his pants are cut away for treatment; nothing sexual.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Soldiers smoke and chew tobacco. Wounded men are given morphine for pain and beg for more, and one soldier accidentally injects himself with it. No alcohol is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

After a calm opening, most of the film is sustained, real-time terror: men screaming in agony for long stretches, smoke and dust after blasts, and the constant threat of being overrun. Even adult viewers may need to look away.

Worth talking about

The film was made with the real veterans and skips heroic music and speeches. Why might they have wanted combat shown this way, and how is it different from typical action movies?
