Grave of the Fireflies: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Not formally rated.

A beautiful, devastating Studio Ghibli war drama for mature tweens and teens, not a cozy animated film for young kids. Two siblings, a teenage boy and his four-year-old sister, try to survive on their own in Japan at the end of World War II. There is almost no profanity and no sexual content; what makes it hard is the grief. Their mother dies of burns from a firebombing, the children slowly starve, and both die, which the film reveals in its opening scene. It was never rated by the MPA. Best for about 12 and up, watched together, with time to talk afterward.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Firebombing raids burn a city, planes strafe civilians, and charred and wounded bodies appear. The mother is shown bandaged and burned and later with maggots on her body. A farmer beats the boy for stealing food.

Language

Mild

Very little, and it varies by translation: the BBFC and Plugged In list only mild words like 'damn,' 'hell' and 'bum,' while Common Sense also heard an occasional 's--t' and 'piss.' Starving people are called 'tramps' and 'bums.'

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sexual content. The siblings bathe together with bare torsos showing, and the little girl is briefly seen naked from behind and from a distance while playing.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Very little: a farmer smokes a pipe in one scene. No drinking or drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained heartbreak and disturbing images: a burned, dying mother, mass cremations, a starving toddler eating dirt and drifting into delirium, and her brother cremating her body. Passersby ignore dying children. Many adults find it hard to watch.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent
  • Death of a child

Worth talking about

Seita's pride keeps him from going back to an unkind aunt. Talk with your teen about whether he made the right choice, and why the film shows ordinary people turning away from starving children.
